Navigating Market Volatility in Retirement

By Net Worth Advisory Group

Almost halfway through 2026, the economic environment is anything but simple. Between shifting energy prices and the rapid growth of AI-driven market rotations, many retirees are facing a level of uncertainty that feels new and personal. While market swings are a normal part of any cycle, watching them happen while you are withdrawing from your savings rather than building them up is a heavy psychological lift.

A smart way to move past that anxiety is to turn it into a concrete plan. Instead of stressing over market timing, the goal is to build a strategy that handles temporary dips without forcing you to cut your monthly budget. When your income is shielded from those daily swings, you can stop obsessing over the headlines and get back to enjoying your life.

Here are the primary recommendations for navigating market volatility in retirement.

Understand and Mitigate “Sequence-of-Returns Risk”

The most critical vulnerability for new retirees is “sequence-of-returns risk”—the danger that a market downturn occurs in the first few years of retirement. Selling investments when prices are in a “trough period” to cover living expenses can permanently deplete a portfolio, hindering its ability to recover even when the market rebounds.

Our strategy: If you retire into a down market, your withdrawal timing is more critical than your average returns. To combat this, here are some suggestions to consider:

  • Lower your withdrawal rate temporarily during down years, if possible. This may involve delaying full retirement by working longer or part-time for a year or two.
  • Defer large expenditures such as the big vacation, new vehicle, or the summer home purchase during these rough market periods.

Implement the “Cash Buffer” Strategy

Instead of selling stock investments when the market is down, maintain a cash reserve (a “war chest”) to cover expenses for a set period.

Our strategy: Set aside 12 to 24 months of living expenses in high-yield savings, cash equivalents, or short-term Treasury funds.

The goal: This allows you to meet essential expenses without liquidating depreciated assets. You can replenish this buffer when the market recovers and equities are performing better.

Review Asset Allocation and Rebalance

A 60/40 portfolio (stocks/bonds) may not be conservative enough for retirees navigating high volatility. In 2026, financial professionals are advising retirees to evaluate their allocation so it truly reflects their need for income stability, not just growth.

Our strategy: Rebalance annually, twice/year, or when asset classes swing significantly. Rebalancing involves selling high-performing assets (selling high) to buy underperforming ones (buying low), which inherently forces you to follow a disciplined investment approach. This is analogous to “resetting your spine” at the chiropractor; by rebalancing, you are resetting the original allocation percentages among your holdings.

Consider a healthy allocation to fixed income: With elevated bond yields in 2026, allocating a higher percentage to fixed-income investments can provide reliable income while reducing overall portfolio volatility. Don’t forget to diversify fixed income investments, balancing credit qualities, yields and maturities.

Dynamic Spending Adjustments

If you are withdrawing 4% annually and the market drops, taking out the same dollar amount means selling more shares at lower prices to raise the needed cash for distributions. A more flexible approach is essential for long-term sustainability.

Our strategy: During market declines, cut some non-essential spending (discretionary costs like travel) and only withdraw what is necessary for essential needs (housing, healthcare, food).

The net effect: This “dynamic spending” approach can significantly increase the longevity of your portfolio, with some studies suggesting flexibility allows for higher, safer withdrawal rates over a 30-year period.

Utilize Tax-Smart Strategies

Market volatility provides opportunities to enhance your retirement income through tax management.

Tax-loss harvesting: Sell underperforming investments to realize a loss, which can be used to offset capital gains or up to $3,000 of ordinary income. Remaining losses can be carried over to offset ordinary income in future tax years.

Roth conversions: A down market is often the best time to convert (even partially) traditional IRAs to Roth IRAs. You pay taxes on a lower portfolio value, allowing the converted amount to grow tax-free and make tax-free withdrawals in the future as a Roth IRA. This strategy is particularly effective for legacy planning by creating tax-free assets for loved ones to inherit that will not cause tax headaches for them in the future. Roth conversions can also help to lower eventual required minimum distributions (RMDs) in the future.

Maintaining a Long-Term Perspective

Retirement savings can be severely impacted by emotional decision-making, such as panic selling during market downturns. This means it’s critical to focus on long-term investment goals rather than responding to short-term market swings.

History has shown us that markets typically rebound from downturns. The long-term trend has been upward, even though recoveries vary in timing and length. By remaining invested and refraining from impulsive decisions, retirees can gain from the potential of long-term prosperity and can weather market volatility.
